So this isn't an attack on those services because if you're limited in knowledge then that may be the best option but the issue with them is I'm pretty sure you can't transfer to a self hosted free or paid software and take the members and content with you.

I would say it would be better to get clued up on something like MyBB or phpBB self hosted then you can move to paid software later on.

Thoughts?

Can you transfer it to something else later on?
I don't think you can.

I used to use ProBoards about a year after they launched. It was neat, but once I had my own money, I quickly got my own hosting and domain, and used phpBB and other software.

If free is all you can do, then that's all you can do.

But it's rented space. If they close down or suspend you for whatever they want, you're stuck with that outcome.

You can spend about $100 a year for decent hosting/domain and use a free forum software like SMF or phpBB, and have a forum that you actually own.

People use ProBoards or Forumotion mainly because they offer free, ready-made forum hosting with minimal setup. You don’t need technical skills or to buy hosting. They are convenient for testing ideas, small communities, or hobby projects, though customization and scalability are limited compared to self-hosted solutions. However, I have never used them and have no plans to use them.

I might not mind a blog that is free, ready-made, with minimal setup. Some examples are Blogger, WordPress.com (not .org the self-hosted thing) etc..

It's because I'm not much into blogs and so I'm not as obsessed with the web development aspect.

I have also used WordPress, the free version, never ran self hosted WordPress. I ran a small personal blog but shut it down a long time ago. I now run forum and use phpbb.

To be honest, I once wondered about this until I understood that not everyone can go through the hassle of managing their own forum. ProBoards and Forumotion are straightforward and very simple to manage for a beginner. As a matter of fact, it's as simple as signing up and creating your community without worrying about servers, domains or maintenance. I think it's ideal for a novice in the forum space.

But since few people visit forums anymore, I don't know how the free services make ad money.
