The Admin Hub Favorite free self hosted software?

Honestly, I like all the popular free forum software but MyBB has been a let-down lately.

And as for SMF, it's probably as good as phpBB, what I use now, but I've decided to go with phpBB, probably because of my liking of Planet Styles themes.

Personally, I prefer WordPress more than the rest. If you seek a software that is adaptable and very easy to modify, I would recommend Wordpress to you. What is most interesting about that software is the vast array of plugins available for nearly every feature you wish to develop. I also like phpBB, infact I use it for the majority of my forums. It's very reliable and ideal for forum communities. I also recommend that as well.

phpBB is not bad. I started using it during version 1! It looked way different back then LOL

However, SMF wins with me.

The reason is the spam. I installed a phpBB forum, SMF forum, and MyBB forum last year to revisit these platforms and try them out again - just for fun.

MyBB was disappointing because the default theme wasn't even responsive.

phpBB was great, but so much spam got through it. It reminded me of the phpBB2 days, before you spent 4 hours manually adding an anti-spam addon because back then, that's how you added addons.

SMF was great with its built-in anti-spam features.

If I had to go free again, I'd choose SMF out of those 3 platforms.

I don't get spam on my phpBB forums and haven't for months before either

The secret is asking people to spell words backward at user registration.

My favorite free self-hosted software is phpBB. It’s the only one I’ve really spent time with, but it’s been reliable, easy to manage, and flexible enough for the projects I’ve handled. It gets the job done without making things complicated.
