I haven’t used a blog on my forums, so I stick with the forum format for the homepage. It keeps the focus on discussions and member interaction rather than long-form articles.
The first publicly open forum I launched had a blog on the home page. I was using wordpress for the blog as well as for the forum. At this moment, I do not have a separate blog for my forum, I have a blog within the forum.
I think a forum is more convenient, since in a forum people join and interact with each other, replying to posts, creating topics, etc. There's a lot of interaction, which makes it more relevant. In contrast, on a blog, people will only see the posts, and if nobody wants to see the posts, the blog will be pretty much dead.
