I usually just buy them as well. If I want to read a book or series but I'm not sure if I'll like it, then I'll borrow it from the library. That's what I did with the Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events series. I wanted to read that series but I wasn't sure if I'd like them so I borrowed the series from the library (a couple books at a time) until I read the whole series.
I usually buy books because I like keeping copies I can revisit. Sometimes I borrow from friends when I just want to preview something or don’t plan to re-read it. Libraries are great resources too, but I haven’t visited them for a while.
We don't have a local library here in my city which you can randomly go and get books, so we are pretty much stock with the single choice of buying a book.
Why borrow something you might need in future for reference purpose? I buy my books and read them in my library. I have a shelve I keep most of my books in my library. I even lend books to people to read, comment and return. I hope I'll get to develop my journal someday.
I do both, borrow books from the library, and those books that are not found there, I buy personally. However, with the advantage of technology, buying books is scarce. It is simply because I just downloaded the book from the web.
I have not borrowed a book before from a library. The only form of borrowing of books that I ever do is to borrow from friends. I prefer to buy my book and build a personal library with the books that I buy. I have bought more than 300 books in my life.
When I was a college student, I used to buy books by volumes, however, when I started working, I seldom buy a book. I only rent from our university library. books this time are pricey. Only small books are sold cheap.
