I think forums should allow third-party widget as long as they Are safe and don’t compromise security. They can really enhance user experience, add cool features and make the forum more interactive. But of course it’s important to have some rules in place to prevent any issues.
I'm very careful about anything third-party I add.
It needs to have amazing reviews, widespread use, and a history of being great.
I won't just use anyone's stuff.

All my plugins for my phpBB forums and WordPress blogs are third party. I trust them, even the one "in development".
But then again, this is phpBB and WordPress. Other software might be less trusted.
